To provide efficient and effective standardization, quality assurance and metrology services to industry and consumers in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of products and services and promote sustainable socio - economic development in Zambia. The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) is a specialised organisation of National importance serving the country in the field of standardization, standards formulation, quality control / assurance, Import and Export quality inspections, certification and removal of technical barriers to trade. The Zambia Bureau of Standards is established by the standards Act CAP 416 of the laws of Zambia. ZABS activities include the following: STANDARDS WRITING AND IMPLEMENTATION
The ZABS formulates national standards, which serve as minimum requirements in the country. The Zambia Bureau of Standards sets different types of standards, namely, basic standards, products standards methods standards and codes of practice.
ZABS implements standards through product certification scheme whereby good quality products conforming to Zambian standards are given a quality mark which gives the consumers confidence. ZABS also implements standards through Import and Export inspections. CALIBRATION SERVICE
The ZABS Metrology Laboratory houses the National Measurement standards and provides calibration services to link measurements to International
measurement system. All measurements are thus traceable to the International Measurement standards. IMPORT QUALITY MONITORING SCHEME (IQMS)
IQMS has been running since 2003. The bureau is able to monitor the quality of goods entering the country through this scheme. Only products meeting Zambian Standards are allowed into the country.
DOMESTIC QUALITY MONITORING SCHEME (DQMS)
ZABS monitor the quality of products covered by Standards and Technical regulations. It is a legal requirement and therefore mandatory for domestic manufacturers to obtain a permit to supply these products on the market. The conditions under which the permit is issued can be obtained from the Bureau. The following products are covered under Statutory Instruments number 43 0f 2003 and 2006 of the Standards Act: Biscuits, Bottled Water, Cattle, Pig and Poultry Feeds, Clear and Opaque Beer, Fertilizers, Fruits - flavoured Drinks, Refined Vegetable Oil, Toilet Soaps and Liquid Household Detergents, Wheat Flour, Vehicle Number Plates.
ZABS TESTING SERVICES
ZABS Testing Laboratories primary objective is to provide high quality laboratory and analytical services that meet specific customer requirements at
competitive cost for provision of technical evidence of compliance to Standards.
SALE OF WORLD STANDARDS
ZABS is a selling agent for International Standards (ISO and IEC), Regional standards, and foreign standards from other countries in the world.
INFORMATION SERVICES
The ZABS Standards library has a large collection of International, Regional and foreign Standards and Technical regulations. It is also the WTO/TBT
inquiry point. The library is also open to members, Government departments and learning institutions.
TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY
Consultancy services and training is offered in the areas of standardisation, quality control and assurance, quality management systems, measurement
technology and front office quality service delivery.
PRODUCT CERTIFICATION
The Zambia Bureau of Standards has been certifying products for more than 30 years and has continued to improve its service. This is a voluntary Quality Assurance scheme.
The presence of the ZABS Certification Mark on the product label assures the consumers that the certified product is periodically inspected and tested and conforms to the required standards.
QMS ZS ISO 9001: 2000
The ZABS Quality Management System mark of conformity denotes that an organizations quality management system complies with ZS
ISO 9001:2000 quality Management system standard. ISO 9001: 2000 is the international language of business.
