Government Launches $1.1 Billion Crude Oil Refinery Project in Ndola

Zambia has taken a significant step towards securing its energy future with the launch of the Zambia Petrochemical Energy Company Limited (ZPEC) project.

The $1.1 billion investment includes a refinery processing 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, producing various products and reducing import dependence.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony in Ndola district, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga MP, emphasized the project’s significance, stating that it marks a major step towards Zambia’s industrialization and economic transformation.

“This project sends a clear message that Zambia is open for business and ready to partner with serious investors,” Hon. Mulenga said, highlighting the project’s potential to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, support downstream industries, and create jobs.

And Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, we’re attracting private sector investment in Zambia’s energy sector. We’re creating an environment that motivates private sector participation, walking the talk of our commitment to a privately-driven economy.”

The project is expected to create over 2,200 jobs during construction and sustain many more, with local Zambians benefiting from job creation and skills transfer.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Province Minister, Hon. Elisha Matambo, welcomed the project, saying, “The provincial administration commits to supporting these initiatives and creating a conducive environment for their success.”

Industrial Development Corporation CEO, Cornwell Muleya, noted, “The project will drive industrialisation, create jobs, and benefit local communities through CSR programs, transforming Ndola city and surrounding areas.”

Additionally, China’s representative expressed gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “We wish Zambia prosperity, its people happiness, and success to today’s ceremony. May this project be commissioned as scheduled, boosting Zambia’s energy and petrochemical industry.
