A Powerful Symbol Returns, Mulungushi Textiles is Officially Back–Mulenga

The long-standing partnership between Zambia and China, forged on a foundation of vision, courage, and solidarity, continues to deliver tangible results for Zambia’s economic transformation.

The cooperation between the two nations was first symbolized by the TAZARA Railway, delivered through the shared vision of founding President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Chairman Mao Zedong. Described as a “lifeline of unity and independence,” the railway remains one of Africa’s greatest monuments to international cooperation.

That vision endures today through a new generation of joint projects. Key milestones include the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway, the ongoing revitalization of TAZARA, and strategic industrial investments such as the resumption of operations at Luanshya’s 28 Shaft, the establishment of battery manufacturing plants, and the construction of a new $1.1 billion oil refinery in Ndola.

Under President Hakainde Hichilema and President Xi Jinping, Zambia-China relations have been further strengthened, with increased focus on industrialisation, value addition, and green energy.

A powerful symbol of this renewed cooperation is the revival of Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe.

Backed by a $140 million investment, the historic textile giant is officially back in operation. The project will support over 2,500 new cotton farmers across the country, create 500 direct jobs at the plant, and establish a 200-megawatt solar power plant to promote sustainable industrial growth.

President Hakainde Hichilema is scheduled to officially reopen Mulungushi Textiles on 16 April 2026.

The reopening marks more than the revival of an industrial icon. It signals Zambia’s accelerating march towards value addition, job creation, energy security, and a greener economy — all anchored in a partnership that has spanned over six decades.
