President Hichilema Reopens Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles in Historic Industrial Milestone

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially reopened the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles Plant, marking a major step in Zambia’s industrialisation and economic diversification agenda.

Speaking during the launch in Kabwe, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, MP, described the occasion as “momentous,” noting that the reopening is a direct result of deliberate policy and sustained leadership.

“Under the guidance of President Hichilema, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has continued to implement policies that promote a private sector-led economy and inclusive growth, anchored on value addition and industrialisation,” the Minister said.

He added that the event signals Kabwe’s economic transformation, driven by a targeted industrial policy framework aligned with the 8th National Development Plan and the National Industrial Policy.

The Minister thanked President Hichilema for his consistent leadership throughout the revitalisation process, which began three years ago. The process involved round-the-clock work between the management of Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Chinese partners, and key ministries including Finance and Defence. “This demonstrates how your administration is committed to revitalising strategic industries that drive industrialisation and economic diversification anchored on value addition,” he said. “You have shown the same commitment in the mining sector.”

Unlike previous attempts to reopen the plant, this relaunch is backed by a clear roadmap and substantial investment. Obsolete machinery has been replaced with new, modern equipment costing millions of US dollars, which was showcased during the presidential inspection tour.  “Today, this Government has done what other administrations have not achieved. We have completely changed the narrative of Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles. This shows the credibility and legitimacy of the reopening,” the Minister stated.

The Minister emphasized that the textile sector is critical to Zambia’s economic transformation and poverty reduction objectives. “The sector is labour intensive and creates many business opportunities along its value chains, giving it the ability to generate substantial employment,” he said.

The Ministry has since reaffirmed its commitment to maintain policy consistency, predictability and transparency to promote the industrial sector, in line with presidential guidance.

The reopening of Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles is now positioned as a flagship of Zambia’s renewed push for value addition, job creation, and sustainable economic development.
