CHIRUNDU ONE STOP BORDER POST (OSBP)

Chirundu Border Post is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe about 140 kilometres south east of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. The border post, which is along the north-south corridor, is an important transit route linking Zambia to Southern, Eastern and North African states.

Revenue/traffic flow

Commissioned as a One Stop Border Post [OSBP] in 2009, Chirundu is one of the busiest borders in Zambia generating K 4,976,211,086.20 of revenue in 2021 with majority of imports coming into the country from South Africa. In terms of traffic, 67,542 trucks were cleared in 2021 representing 18.23 percent of volume.

Project intervention at the border

Despite the border being among the busiest in Zambia, this entry port has continued to face some operational challenges making it difficult to reduce the time and cost of facilitating trade. Through the ZBPUP, interventions are being made to improve trade facilitation at the border.

Key interventions include, the review of legislation governing both private and public institutions to ensure they conform to the provisions of the Border Management and Trade Facilitation Act 12 of 2018. The project is also assisting most Public Agencies with ICT systems connectivity and infrastructure as most used none or basic systems that could result in delayed clearance. Further intervention includes the upgrading of trade facilitation infrastructure and equipment at the border post as well as capacity building for stakeholders on OSBP operations, World Trade Organisation Trade Facilitation Agreement (WTO TFA) measures and COMESA Trade Facilitation instruments.

The project is also expediting improved Inter-Agency Coordination among border agencies and enhancing ICT inter connectivity between Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) to enhance border efficiency among other key interventions.
