NAKONDE ONE STOP BORDER POST (OSBP).
Nakonde is one of border towns in Muchinga Province of Zambia, with a land area of 5,513 sq sharing international boundaries with Tanzania in the north and Malawi in the East. The Nakonde border post has been identified as an important transit route crossing in the North-South transport corridor.
On 5th October 2019, the Nakonde/Tunduma border post was launched as a One Stop Border post (OSBP). The border facilitates imports from East Africa and North Africa, Middle East, Asia and the rest of the globe.
Revenue/traffic flow
The Nakonde OSBP is one of the busiest entry/exit port facilitating imports and exports for Zambia and on average, clears 800 trucks daily. The border is also a major transit port with an average of 750 import, export and transit trucks using the route daily. The border facilitates trade for, not just Zambia and Tanzania, but the region including countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zimbabwe with 65% of cargo transiting through Zambia and 35% destined for Zambia.
In terms of revenue, the port generated about K3.1 billion annual revenue collection from handling of 71,134 consignments representing 19.2% of the total volume handled by customs in 2021. Gas oil and vehicles topped the list of commodities cleared as imports and in terms of transits, the same goods also topped the list.
Project intervention at the border
Key intervention under the ZBPUP include the implementation of Coordinated Border Management Principles, review of legislative and administrative framework, procedures for cooperation, human resources and ICT and connectivity. Other intervention incorporates the establishment of an Interagency Coordinated Border Management working group, upgrading of trade facilitation infrastructure and equipment at the border post.
